Essex Uni seeks 'world class' architect for new democracy centre

The University of Essex is looking for an ‘eminent architect’ to create a world-class headquarters for its proposed International Centre for Democracy, Peace and Human Rights

The building, to be located on the University’s Colchester Wivenhoe Campus, will bring together existing departments within the university.

‘The scheme is still in its infancy’, said Richard Halsall of the University of Essex Estates Department.

‘We haven’t got a final predicted budget for the total contract value. At present it’s currently standing at approximately £5 million but it may be enlarged if we get more funding.

‘The centre will bring together the some of the world-class research departments that currently exist on the campus. We’re looking for an eminent architect who can build a world class building’.

The OJEU document spells out that the winning designer or team must have ‘experience of fund-raising.’

The project is currently at expressions of interest stage with the deadline of 1 February 2010.

A notice published on the Official Journal of the European Union stated that  eligible practices must have professional indemnity of not less than £5 million.
