Egret West vies for Alton estate masterplan

Studio Egret West, which overhauled Park Hill in Sheffield, is one of four teams competing to masterplan the regeneration of the Grade II*-listed Alton West housing estate in south west London

The four-strong shortlist, including Tibbalds, Broadway Malyan and Levitt Bernstein, has been drawn up by local authority Wandsworth Council which is seeking a long-term strategy for the 1959 estate in Roehampton.

The successful team will investigate options for renewing and potentially extending the architecturally significant post-war housing development.

Overlooking Richmond Park, the London County Council Architects Department-designed Alton West estate features five 11-storey ‘slab’ blocks (pictured) alongside a series of 12-storey point blocks.

The slab blocks, known as The Highcliffe, are Grade II*-listed and recognised as a response to Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in Marseilles.

The council is simultaneously procuring a masterplanner for the £100 million overhaul of its Winstanley and York Road estates in Battersea.

Design teams shortlisted for the job are Tibbalds, HTA, Levitt Bernstein and URS.

Wandsworth’s housing spokesman, councillor Paul Ellis, said: ‘We have been investing significant sums in the Winstanley and York Road estates for many years, but want to see if we can do even more to create an area that all residents are proud to call home.

‘The current improvement project promises to be the most extensive yet as it aims to not only enhance and improve the physical environment, but also to deliver commercial and community services and provide local people with greater education, employment and training opportunities.’

The winning teams are expected to be announced in May and start work immediately on a six to nine month-long design process.
