Duggan Morris and vPPR on floating cinema shortlist

The four-strong international shortlist of practices competing to design a floating cinema in east London has been revealed

Manser Medal-winning practice Duggan Morris, emerging all-female trio vPPR, Berlin’s Nilsson Pflugfelder and OBRA from New York are all competing for the high-profile job.

Organised by the Architecture Foundation and Up Projects, the competition resurrects Studio Weave’s 2011 floating cinema concept (pictured) with a new ‘delight and playfulness’ theme.

Shortlisted studio’s will take part in a workshop with artists Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie to develop their proposals.

The ship must be able to host on-board screenings, project larger outdoor screening and host film-related events.

Winners will be announced in mid-September during the London Design Festival.

The vessel is planned to start cruising on east London’s waters in summer 2013.
