DSDHA wins Stockwell public realm job

Deborah Saunt’s practice DSDHA has won a contest to redevelop the 0.15ha public realm around Stockwell centre, south London

The locally-based studio beat Atkins, Urban Initiatives Studio, Shape Landscape and the masterminds behind Leicester Square’s regeneration Burns + Nice to win the £600,000 scheme.

The Lambeth and Stockwell Partnership-backed project will see a new public square created outside the district’s busy underground station.

DSDHA’s plans will see new paving, seating, lighting, canopies and Robinia trees erected on Binfield Road which connects the station to Adie, Button & Partners’ Grade II*-listed 1952 bus garage nearby.

Plans to close the district’s gyratory road system and create a new public space linking the square to a nearby War Memorial Garden are also under discussion. Work on the new Stockwell Square is expected to complete this summer.

  • It is very good to see some investment in public space by a Local Authority - and it is also heartening for the profession when a tendering authority selects a design-led scheme and an award-winning practice.

Hope no economic crisis stops this project from progressing.
