Design Engine wins green light for Reading footbridge

Reading Borough Council has approved plans by Winchester-based architects Design Engine and engineers Peter Brett Associates for this foot and cycle bridge over the Thames

The single-masted, cabled-stayed structure close to Fry’s Island, between the existing Caversham and Reading Bridges, will help link the north of the town to the recently overhauled station and surrounding redevelopment.

According to the practice, the bridge’s desk is supported by ‘paired cables which reach up to the top of the mast in a vertical fan formation, creating an elegant and balanced solution’.

The bridge is to be funded through the authority’s successful bid for cash from the £20.7million Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) fund.

Richard Jobson, co-founder Design Engine Architects: ‘We’ve taken great care to create a simple but elegant design providing both a focal point along this part of the river as well as creating a joyful route across the Thames and beyond.’
