Design Council CABE launches £130,000 community grant scheme

Design Council CABE has launched two new grant schemes aimed at helping people get a better quality of design for their community

The money is intended to help neighbourhoods in England work with design experts to develop a blueprint for how their area should look, with reviews to make sure new builds fit the ethos of the area.

Not-for-profit groups can get money from the first scheme to advise community organisations so that local projects have quality design behind them.

The second pot of money is for design review bodies that already exist. They can get cash from the Design Review Small Grants Programme to get local people involved in a planned development to improve its design. Design Council CABE wants them to look for new and creative ways to get people involved.

In total 19 grants are up for grabs from that programme and the Neighbourhood Projects Small Grants Programme, which will share out £130,000. Groups can start applying via the Design Council website from Friday and the final deadline is Monday August 1.

Chief Executive of the Design Council said: ‘I’m delighted that we can continue to support the promotion of good design at a local level and help communities really take an active role in shaping their built environment. It’s localism in action, and I’m looking forward to seeing innovative proposals from applicants all over the country.’

The organisers said one body could apply to both programmes and potentially win cash from each, enabling it to offer a range of design expertise to a community over the long-term. More information on who can apply and how the process works is available at www.designcouncil.org.uk/grants.
