DC CABE has given YRM’s £10 billion Hinkley Point C nuclear reactor scheme a glowing design review
The Bristol Channel project for French energy giant EDF was described as ‘graphically elegant’ and ‘pleasing’ by the design watchdog.
It said: ‘We commend the architectural approach, especially the design of the three people-orientated buildings; which, through the use of common materials and detailing, form a recognisable family.’
The report, published following a design review, praised the ‘civic character’ of parts of the site including a visitor centre which will allow the public close-up views of the power station.
DC CABE was however critical of the project’s ‘narrow palette of a tonal range of greys’ which it said ‘could be more inspiring’.
The design watchdog urged the design team to consider a ‘greater localised use of colour and texture’ in a bid to differentiate buildings and assist way finding.
In November, West Somerset District Council approved plans for work including site excavation and fencing.
YRM was bought by RMJM last year.
