David Miller scoops planning for 23-storey Aldgate Hotel

David Miller Architects has won planning permission for this 251-room tower hotel at Aldgate, east London

The 23-storey skyscraper tower is part of a commercial hub on the City fringe.

The proposal is described by the practice as ‘a slender tower which responds to the site’s modest footprint of 32m x 16m’ as well as the massing of its proposed, already approved, neighbours’.

A new public pedestrian route will pass through the centre of the building allowing the hotel lobby, cafe and bar to open out on four sides of the ground floor.

The hotel restaurant has been introduced at first floor level so as to overlook and further animate the public realm. The result is a design that provides space for the public and guests to relax and meet, both inside and outside the building.

David Miller submits 23-storey Aldgate Hotel

David Miller Architects has submitted a planning application for this 251-room tower hotel within the Aldgate Masterplan

The proposal is described by the practice as ‘a slender tower which responds to the site’s modest footprint of 32m x 16m’ as well as the massing of its proposed, already approved, neighbours’.

The scheme’s longer elevations are expressed as two curved-glass shields with the shorter sides designed as stone-clad ‘bookends’.

A new public pedestrian route will pass through the centre of the building allowing the hotel lobby, cafe and bar to open out on four sides of the ground floor.

Andrew de Silva, Associate Director responsible for the project said; ‘Given the tight site it was a real challenge to incorporate all the logistics that the hotel needs at street level whilst creating an uplifting and enjoyable public experience.

‘However we think that the proposal makes a very positive contribution to the public realm both in terms of its architecture and the activity associated with it.’
