D5 completes £2.4m Milton Keynes rugby pavilion

[First look + plans] D5 Architects has opened the doors on this new home for the Milton Keynes Rugby Union Football Club

The £2.4million Emerson Valley Sports Pavilion proejct includes a new pavilion building, three full-sized rugby pitches and a training pitch.

The Birmingham-based practice won planning approval for the scheme, which has been backed by Milton Keynes Council, in 2007.

The architect’s view

There is a storey height level change between the car park and the pitch level, and the building is designed to mediate between the two levels. There is a dramatic external staircase that rises through the building to pitchside. The pavilion accommodation is at the first floor with function room and entertaining to one side of the building, and changing room and pitch facilities to the other side. A dark brick wall guides the route of the players from the entrance of the pavilion to the pitches. This wall runs across the front of the building, is exposed internally to follow the internal staircase and then runs through the changing room corridor to appear at the exit to the rugby pitches. Conceptually this reflects the rugby ball being moved behind the line of the players in a game.
