CPMG wins planning for HMS Belfast visitor centre

[First look + plans + project data] Nottingham-based CPMG Architects has landed planning permission for a Quayside Pavilion serving HMS Belfast in central London

The facility will include a new entrance to the River Thames-based naval tourist attraction, as well as a ground floor cafe and a roof top bar.

It will replace the current quayside entrance, which was built as a temporary structure more than 20 years ago and has become outdated and inefficient, it is claimed.

Planning permission has been granted, and work is scheduled to begin at the end of this year and be completed by next summer.

A number of long-term improvements are being made to the ship, which saw action in both the Second World War and the Korean War and has just celebrated 40 years as a tourist attraction.

CPMG associate director Anil Parmar said: ‘It’s great news that planning permission has been gained for the new Pavilion, which will significantly enhance the facilities at HMS Belfast for the benefit of visitors to this important tourist attraction. We now look forward to work starting on site and then seeing the final result once the Pavilion has been completed.’

HMS Belfast director Phil Reed added: ‘We’re thrilled about the new Quayside Pavilion, which we believe will give HMS Belfast the support she needs to continue to be a high profile, cultural destination.’
