Construction starts on Heatherwick’s ‘Home of Imagination’

Work has begun on a distillery and visitor centre designed by Heatherwick Studios for gin brand Bombay Sapphire

Planning permission for the multi-million pound restoration project was granted in February 2012 and will turn the derelict papermaking facility at Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire into the brand’s first UK distillery and visitor centre.

The project will restore existing buildings and grounds on the two-hectare site as well as providing a new glass structure to display the 10 botanicals key to the gin’s flavour.

Thomas Heatherwick, who was awarded the first Bombay Sapphire Prize for excellence and innovation in glass, said: ‘The glass house, influenced by Britain’s rich heritage of glass house structures, will be two separate structures providing both a humid environment for spices that originate from the tropics, as well as a dry temperate zone for Mediterranean plants.’

Construction is being managed by Meller Ltd and is due for completion in autumn 2013.
