Competition to find Hammerson Swansea replacement

Swansea City Council is to launch a contest to redesign a huge city centre plot after developer Hammerson pulled out of a planned £1billion regeneration scheme

Details of the competition have not been confirmed, but the authority is keen to fill the void created when Hammerson announced last week that it was scrapping plans for a vast shopping centre.

Working to a 2008 masterplan drawn up by BDP, the scheme would have included 56,000m² of retail space. The original masterplan also included 1,000 homes by Urban Splash, but the housing element was jettisoned in 2009.

Referring to the latest twist in the long running saga Swansea Council said: ‘…a competition will be held for architects and students to design a modern and welcoming city centre that combines retail, residential and office developments.’

The competition is expected to be held ‘early next year’.
