Competition opens for Guangzhou science museum

An international design competition has been launched for a new £113 million museum of science in Guangzhou, China

The contest – backed by the Guangzhou Bureau of Science and IT – seeks proposals for a new 80,000m² facility east of Lingnan Square.

The new building will be constructed on a 2.95 hectare site in the southern part of Guangzhou’s new urban central axis near to the city’s landmark, 600 metre-tall Canton Tower.

According to the competition brief, the science museum must use ‘state-of-art green building technology’ and be ‘aesthetic, pragmatic, cost-effective and safe’.

Eight teams will receive around £56,000 each and be invited to submit proposals for the new structure following an open prequalification round. The competitors will be announced on 30 July.

Three winning teams will be announced in November and will receive £28,000 each. One of the schemes will then be selected for construction with its team awarded a design contract.

The project is one of four major venues planned for China’s third largest city including a new art gallery, culture centre and city museum. Zaha Hadid completed a 1,800-seat opera house in Guangzhou four years ago.

International applicants must have recent experience of designing and delivering equivalent sized buildings or have completed a project with ‘significant international influence’.

The deadline for requests to participate is 25 July.
