ColladoCollins lands leisure complex job in Romania

[First Look] London-based practice ColladoCollins has won the international contest to design a leisure complex, featuring a roof-top park on the outskirts of Bucharest, Romania

Part of a luxury leisure development the 8,500m² scheme, set amidst an oak forest, includes a beach resort, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, spa, fitness club, four restaurants and an ice-rink.

The competition was held by Tiriac Holdings, owned by Romanian tennis player Ion Tiriac, who will be developing the project.

Jonathan Collins, partner of ColladoCollins said: ‘The site sits in the middle of a beautiful woodland and will be the hub to a new residential development. It occurred to us that the overall concept is like an inversion of Central Park, with development sitting within an island in the middle of the forest.

He added: ‘The concept is based upon an inversion of this idea with this new building bringing some of the woodland into the heart of the development, creating a connection between the site and the surrounding environment and bringing uninterrupted outdoor space back into the project.

‘The flexible space under the roof-park accommodates the complex programme of uses, creating a rich variety of spaces with contrasting characters and views’.
