City of London Academy by Swanke Hayden Connell Architects
[FIRST LOOK + PROJECT DATA + PLANS] Swanke Hayden Connell Architects has completed the second phase of the academy in Islington
The 8,060m² building replaces Islington Green School, made famous by the Pink Floyd hit Another Brick in the Wall which was sung pupils from the 1979 fourth form music class.
Last month 825 pupils aged between 14-19, moved into their new home.
Sat between 19th and 20th century buildings, the second phase of the project aims to ‘maintain the scale and character of its residential context’.
The height of the buildings has been restricted to three floors and a ‘simple material palette’ has been used.
Sustainable features include; a ground source heat pump, green roof and photovoltaic panels.
The Richard Cloudesley School, a special needs secondary school, will be co-located and integrated into the same site as the Academy.
The final phase, the extension and refurbishment of the Tudor Rose Building and landscape, is currently under construction.
