'City as Gymnasium' at CUBE, Manchester

Manchester’s CUBE gallery takes urban exercise to a new level.

The streets become a playground for a series of workshops called City As Gynamsium at the Centre for the Urban Built Environment (CUBE), Manchester.

The exhibition, which runs to 3 October, features works by Lottie Child, Peter Liversidge, Tsui Kuang-Yu, Neville Gabie and Media Shed (David Valentine).

The artists use photography, performance and film to explore issues relating to public space, behaviour, expectation, repetition and social or physical flux.

Valentine’s The Duellists, is a choreographed battle that was filmed using 160 CCTV cameras at the Manchester Arndale shopping centre.

The exhibition is also the starting point for a series of free workshops aimed at 11-14 year olds.

Lead by artist Catherine Clements and architect John Bishop, Standing the City on its Head encourages participants to explore alternative methods of navigating and interacting with the designed world.

Until 3rd October, 113-115 Portland St, Manchester, M1 6FB 0161 237 5525
