Chipperfield's Kent gallery tops out

The David Chipperfield Architects-designed Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate, Kent, has topped out – a year after building work began

The two-storey building is raised on a plinth to protect against flooding and is formed by six identical volumes with mono-pitched roofs that provide north light in all the upper-level galleries.

When finished, the gallery – built to celebrate the town’s association with JMW Turner – will be clad in white opaque glass.

Kent County Council, which is leading the project, will open the gallery in Spring 2011.
