Chipperfield to overhaul Mies' Berlin masterpiece

The Stirling Prize-winning architect, whose practice David Chipperfield Architects has offices in Berlin, will redesign the modern art museum for the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (PCHF).

More than 20 practices bid for the project, which involves substantial renovation work including the restoration of visible surfaces, and the creation of a new shop and café.

PCHF president Hermann Parzinger said: ‘With David Chipperfield, I know this icon of modern architecture is in the best hands.’

He hailed the firm’s sensitivity in dealing with architectural heritage on the much-publicised renovation of the Neues Museum, also in Berlin, which narrowly missed out on the Stirling Prize in 2010.

Chipperfield was also shortlisted for the UK’s leading architectural accolade in 2011 with another major museum overhaul in Germany - the Folkwang Museum, his fifth German building to be nominated for the Stirling Prize.

The Neue Nationalgalerie was built between 1965 and 1968, and was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It is the only work by the architect built in Germany after World War 2.

Work will begin on the revamp in 2015 and complete in 2018.

Meanwhile, a David Chipperfield-designed Valentino boutique was given a star-studded opening in Hollywood earlier this week.
