Caruso St John misses out in contest for Swedish media HQ

Danish practice Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter has beaten Caruso St John in the competition to design a new head office for media company Gota Media in Kalmar, Sweden

The Copenhagen-based outfit was praised for designing a ‘a building which far exceeded the expectations of the most stringent of requirements, as regards the cultural history of the site, the inner city’s need for quality recreational space and the operational functions of the company’.

Both practices had been asked to draw up detailed plans for the new office block in the centre of the town after been selected as finalists from a longlist of 50 invited, practices.

Lauding the Dorte Mandrup scheme, the judges went on to say: ‘Kalmar and Gota Media, will be endowed with an unusually beautiful building that gives the city, the location and company operations a significant return on investment.’

Caruso St John down to last two in contest for Swedish media HQ

Caruso St John will fight it out against Danish finalist Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter to win the competition to design a new head office for media company Gota Media in Kalmar, Sweden

The pair has already seen off four other international firms to make it in to the final of the contest, which will see the winner mastermind the new office block in the centre of the town.

Caruso St John’s scheme (pictured above) was described, by the judges, as being inspired ‘by early Swedish functionalism in combination with sublime Japanese-like transitions between the building and its surroundings and between the site and the water.’

A fascinating and remarkably honest appraisal of the two schemes – Dorte Mandrup’s is pictured below – can be read in the attached document (see bottom right)
