Capita lands office scheme in 'buoyant' Nigeria

Capita Symonds has secured a large office scheme in Nigeria as the practice continues to progress in Africa

The practice has designed the Heritage Place office building on the outskirts of Lagos for a private developer.

It is also working on a headquarters for an oil company in the same city, as well as a one-off house and several schools across Nigeria.

Capita Architecture design director Andrew Pryke told AJ: ‘The Nigerian market feels buoyant at the moment. There is an appetite to be on the world stage, and the confidence is there.’

The AJ100 giant is also in talks over schemes in Uganda and Ghana as it builds on relationships in Africa.

Heritage Place aims to become a Lagos landmark, combining striking façade design and top-end office space.

The building comprises 15,300 sq m of office space over eight floors, as well as 390 car parking spaces over six floors and a lobby with meeting rooms and a café.

Pryke said: ‘The car park acts almost as a podium, with the office block on top.’

It was designed to conform with strict planning restrictions governing maximum height and minimum car parking spaces.

Nigeria is proving a growing market for UK architects.

The head of Studio Seilern Architects earlier this year hailed the ‘sophistication’ of the Nigerian market after the practice secured its first scheme in the country.

Christina Seilern has recently told the AJ that she felt Nigeria offered exciting opportunities to British design teams.
