Calatrava floats Doha Bay crossing in Qatar

Spanish starchitect Santiago Calatrava has designed a sensational tunnel-and-bridge sea link in Qatar

Calatrava’s 12km-long proposal, named Sharq Crossing, consists of three bridges connected by multi-lane subsea tunnels.

The crossing will connect Hamad International Airport with Doha’s cultural and business districts.

As well as boosting transport options in the Qatari capital the scheme is aimed to create a landmark infrastructure for the city.

Calatrava said: ‘Architecture for public works humanises the natural landscape and serves the community.

‘The Sharq Crossing project for Doha is a great opportunity to develop an exceptional and grand piece of public work.’

One of the crossing’s bridges, named West Bay, will incorporate a recreational park that can be accessed by a funicular transport. The other two bridges will be called Cultural City and Al Sharq.

All three have been designed with a minimal number of supports to reduce long-term impact to the marine environment.

The tunnels will provide an expressway of three lanes in each direction between Doha’s Hamad International Airport and West Bay; and two lanes each way between West Bay and Lusail.

‘Sharq Crossing is an engineering masterpiece of design and, while providing an important new artery to Doha’s existing road network, it will be instantly recognisable across the world and will be an emblem for Qatar,’ said Nasser Bin Ali Al-Mawlawi, president of Qatari public works authority Ashghal.

Calatrava was recently forced to defend his £81m fees for a landmark scheme in Valencia.

Qatar is gearing up to host the 2022 World Cup, and has been described as the ‘Premiership’ of architecture.
