Burwell Deakins raises curtain on Cornish drama centre

[FIRST LOOK + PROJECT DATA] Burwell Deakins: Architects has completed this £15.4 million performance centre for University College Falmouth at its Tremough campus in Penryn, Cornwall

The practice, which has recently changed its name from Nicholas Burwell Architects to recognise the increasing role of William Deakins, landed the 4,100m2 project in July 2008 after seeing off a competition shortlist which included BDP, Aedas, Alec French Architects and HLM.

Sitting in the grounds of the Grade II-listed Tremough House, the naturally ventilated building is arranged around a three-storey gallery and houses teaching and performing space for drama, music, dance and choreography.

The 20-strong Deptford firm collaborated on the BREEAM Excellent-rated project with Exeter-based Grainge Architects,
