BuckleyGrayYeoman unwraps Burberry factory development

BuckleyGrayYeoman (BGY) has completed a £30million redevelopment of Burberry’s former textile factory in Hackney.

The architect worked on behalf of Aitch Group to renovate and extend the industrial building which will form part of a planned Fashion Hub quarter in east London.

The project included the conversion of two linked buildings in Chatham Place, creating residential and office sapce which ‘displays clear references to the buildings’ industrial past’.

The former factory’s brickwork and concrete have been left exposed with the ‘industrial’ ceiling heights ranging from 4-4.5m.

The completed site hosts 86 loft-style apartments, 1,254m² of ground floor space and a two-storey rooftop extension designed as a distinctive white rendered box with zinc detailing has created sizable penthouse apartments.

At the heart of the development runs an internal street which according to BGY works as ‘a piece of public realm that roots the building within its context and connects it to its surroundings’.

A predominant feature of the original factory was its Crittal steel-framed windows, which will be updated to improve energy performance and encapsulate the site’s original characteristics.

At the heart of the development runs an internal street, a piece of public realm that roots the building within its context and connects it to its surroundings.

Both sides of the development will be linked by bridges made from perforated galvanised steel, material inspired by the building’s industrial past. These bridges are also linked to covered external walkways which create the key circulation routes for the development.
