Broadway Malyan to design Chinese school campus
London-based Broadway Malyan has secured its first major international school project in China
The practice will design a school campus for up to 1,500 pupils in Shanghai for Dulwich College International.
Broadway Malyan will deliver masterplanning, architectural, interior and landscape design for the Minhang Campus project.
Built on a 40,000m2 site, it will break down into two campuses, one of which will be called Dulwich College and consist of three distinct schools – early years; junior school; and senior school.
There is space for a second campus on the site, though the client is yet to decide what format this will take.
Broadway Malyan’s masterplan for Dulwich College wraps accommodation around a grand quad featuring sports pitches and a cricket oval.
The first phase of this campus will involve four buildings – combined early years and juniors; central facilities, including a 560-seat theatre; senior school; and an indoor sports hall including a 50m swimming pool.
Broadway Malyan is actively targeting the international schools sector. It has completed seven schools for the Abu Dhabi Education Council recently, as well as the £66m Bournville College campus in Birmingham.
Director Aidan Ridyard told AJ: ‘This is our first major commission for an international school in China, building on similar commissions in the Middle and Far East.
’Having a dedicated education team we are able to maintain a high level of research to inform our work with new and creative approaches which are both home grown and international in their thinking.’
He said China was just one of several growing education sectors around the world.
‘We also see a strong market in the future in India and Malaysia. South America is also promising, with strong potential in Chile and Argentina, as is Central Africa following on from major international funding packages for the sector.’
