Broadway Malyan to design stunning and innovative 'Parc Guell' for Everton Park in Liverpool
Broadway Malyan sees off Austin:Smith-Lord, Studio Three and Cass Associates with ‘stunning and innovative’ design for Everton Park site
Broadway Malyan has won the competition to design a £1.8 million centrepiece ‘hub’ as part of plans to transform Liverpool’s Everton Park into an international visitor destination.
The company’s ‘stunning and innovative’ scheme was chosen ahead of concepts by local practices Austin:Smith-Lord, Studio Three, Cass Associates and shedkm with Union North offshoot FVMA.
The firms were asked to draw up proposals for ‘a meeting place and operational hub’ housing a café, information centre and gallery as the flagship scheme within a wider proposal to create a Liverpudlian version of Barcelona’s famous Parc Guell.
Max Steinberg, chief executive of project backer and economic development company Liverpool Vision, said: ‘This is a major milestone on Everton Park’s journey and the design will act as a spur to approaching funding bodies to help us start the project later this year.
‘It was a close-run competition but Broadway Malyan’s stunning and innovative approach fit most perfectly with our ambition to make Everton Park a major tourist destination and a great community asset.’
Artist Fritz Haeg and High Line-mastermind James Corner have already released plans for a heritage trail and other landscape improvements to help knit the ‘underused’ park into the city.
Broadway Malyan’s design will now be worked up and submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a funding assessment.
