Brian Waters appointed as National Planning Forum chair
The National Planning Forum has appointed architect and planner Brian Waters as chair
Waters said he will use his experience in architecture and planning to promote the value of good design.
‘As an architect I have an opportunity to keep an eye on that aspect of the planning system that is often ignored by everyone else,” he said. “I’m going to make sure that design is no longer as neglected as it has been.’
Waters said he is optimistic about the changes to the planning system and the opportunities for the National Planning Forum to influence policy.
But he added that while the changes will create opportunities for architects, it is up to the profession to make the most of them.
‘One of my messages for the architecture profession is to pay a bit more attention and understanding to the planning system because that way you can be more effective,’ he said.
‘Architects, if they can only wake themselves up to getting a grip and understanding the planning system rather than saying ‘I want to stick to my 5B pencils’, will get a lot more influence.’
