Binom bags Norwegian island job

London practice Binom Architects has been commissioned to design an artificial island in Norway

The firm will masterplan the island in Haugesund, on the fjord-lined West coast of the Scandinavian nation.

It will be built around the city’s Storasund reefs and benefit from a new bridge that will connect the mainland with the existing island of Risoy.

Binom secured the commission after winning an award at the Europan 11 competition for designers under the age of 40.

Its plans for the island include a cruise terminal; a marina; residential blocks; mixed-use buildings; and facilities for the Norwegian Film Awards and Haugesund jazz festival.

Binom’s has also created a concept design for the bridge, developed with London-based engineering office Michael Hadi Associates.

Binom director Marta Granda Nistal told AJ: ‘We have developed three visions for Haugesund 2030 where the artificial island would play a major role into the regeneration of the urban identity.

‘We have also designed three scenarios or systems of articulation of uses into specific island shapes: Canal Island, Lagoon Island and Indent Island.’

Binom, established in 2009, is working on projects including a temporary pavilion in Madrid for the Spanish Government; a cocktail rooftop bar in Waterloo, London; and a mixed-use building in Haugesund.
