BIG designs big pin-like tower for Phoenix

[FIRST LOOK] Danish practice BIG is to design a 128m-tall observation tower in Phoenix, Arizona

The structure – a core of reinforced concrete with an open-air spiral sphere at the top – will serve as a symbol for the US city.

Developer Novawest commissioned the ‘Pin’ tower to provide tourists and residents a spectacular view of surrounding mountain ranges and dramatic sunsets.

It is also said to resemble a ‘pin marking a point on a map’.

The sphere at the top will contain ‘flexible’ exhibition, retail and recreation spaces accessed through three glass elevators.

The base of the tower will serve as a public plaza, offering shade, water features and a small amount of retail together with a subterranean queuing area.

Bjarke Ingels, founding partner at BIG, said: ‘Like the Guggenheim museum of New York offering visitors a unique art experience descending around its central void, the motion at the Pin is turned inside-out allowing visitors to contemplate the surrounding city and landscape of Phoenix.

‘Like a heavenly body hovering above the city, the Pin will allow visitors to descend from pole to pole in a dynamic three dimensional experience seemingly suspended in midair.’
