Bennetts advising on Sadler’s Wells expansion

The architect behind the Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres overhaul, Rab Bennetts, is advising Sadler’s Wells on its plans for a new 500-seat venue

London’s world famous Sadler’s Wells dance centre announced plans to create a new 500-seat theatre in the capital last week.

While no architect has been appointed to the high-profile job it has been confirmed Rab Bennetts of Bennetts Associates is chairing a buildings committee advising on the project.

Designed to host mid-scale contemporary work, the new theatre could open as early as 2018.

Bennetts will help the committee find a location for the new building which will be somewhere in size between Sadler’s Wells 1,560-seat main auditorium and the 260 person-capacity Lilian Baylis studio.

Bennetts commented: ‘Sadler’s Wells is a hugely energetic theatre and being on the Board provides an invaluable insight not only into programming but also into what it’s like being a client.’

London-based de Matos Ryan has meanwhile been chosen to refurbish Sadler’s Wells RHWL and Nicholas Hare-designed complex on Roseberry Avenue.

The overhaul will focus on upgrading the 15 year-old building’s lobbies, theatre equipment, and mechanical and electrical systems.
