BDP lands huge Zhengdong transport-node masterplan

BDP is hunting for further masterplanning work in China after securing a project to design a 2 million m² district close to new high speed rail infrastructure

The AJ100 behemoth was this week named as the winner of the Zhengdong Transit Hub masterplan competition.

Its 300 ha plan includes commercial, residential, retail and cultural facilities in the city of Zhengzhou, which lies on the crossroads of two crucial high speed lines.

Senior Transport designer Robert Keefe told AJ the firm was looking to win more projects created by China’s rapidly evolving transport infrastructure.

‘We continue to find opportunities in China, and it is a growing area of business for us,’ he said.

‘We are starting to see more success on masterplanning projects such as this, and are waiting for a couple more decisions in the near future.

‘Winning competitions is always good and we hope it will help us to continue our success here.’

More than 200,000 passengers will flow through Zhengdong station each day.

BDP’s plans for the surrounding district include a retail area that will form a direct connection between the railway station and green space at Four Seasons Park.

The retail area has been designed in the form of a winter garden that will provide protection from wind and rain while allowing in natural light.

A number of towers are located at the edges of the park, staggered with a series of mid-rise blocks to create a balanced composition.
