BDP completes University of Wales Newport campus
[First look + project data + plans] BDP has completed this £25.2 million City Campus building for the University of Wales in Newport
Hosting television studios, theatres, an exhibition space and classrooms, the 12,500m² building brings together the university’s business, technology, art, design and media disciplines under one roof.
Chris Harding, BDP’s head of education, said: ‘The building creates a sociable and exciting setting to stimulate collaborative interdisciplinary learning and research on a spectacular waterfront site. The new building will transform the identity of this progressive University.’
The centre’s podium is clad in blue brick with ‘random bonding to create pattern and texture’ while the plateau and winter gardens are glazed and the upper level studios are wrapped in horizontally seamed black zinc. The roof soffit is lined in Oregon pine battens.
The project cost £2030/m² and was completed two weeks ahead of time. The design also achieved BREEAM Excellent rating.
Facilitating up to 2,700 students, the building aims to ‘maximise’ its visual connection with the city and act as a beacon for regeneration.
Peter Noyes, University vice chancellor said: [This is a] truly stunning building providing a focal point for learning, innovation, creativity and enterprise.’
