BDP completes BSF school in Teddington
[First look + plans + project data] BDP has unwrapped this £29 million BSF school in Teddington, west London
Replacing a dilapidated school building, the 10,666m² scheme was designed without corridors as part of a bid to create an ‘open, inviting and safe environment’ for students.
The five-storey structure features two wings of ‘flexible’ teaching space wrapped around a central atrium.
Planned for ‘shareduse’, the school building also doubles up as a public sports centre during the evenings and weekends.
The design achieved the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and features a passive cooling system which passes air through tubes buried in the ground before supplying it to classrooms.
Project architect Kieth Papa said: ‘We are delighted to have been able to work collaboratively with Teddington School to develop an exciting new school building which will enthuse those who use it and create a new sense of community within the school.
‘The building was always intended as a showcase for the school’s great achievements and I really look forward to going back in a year’s time to see how they have taken the building and stamped their identity on it.’
The school will be officially opened this Friday (13 May) by the government business secretary Vince Cable.
