BDP bags Strathclyde Innovation Centre job

[First look] BDP has won a design competition to build an £89 million Technology and Innovation Centre for the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow

Planned as a ‘global economic hub’ for the city, the Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) building will host 850 university staff, students and local business people.

The 22,000m² building will feature office space, workshops, meetings rooms, ‘laser optics materials’ laboratories and ‘high voltage’ facilities.

Planned to start on site in 2012, the scheme is expected to complete in late 2013. BDP is lead designer for the project, working within a Gardiner and Theobald-led project team.

The centre was launched on 11 March by Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond. He said: ‘The University of Strathclyde’s Technology and Innovation Centre is a transformational project for Glasgow, building on Scotland’s great tradition of innovating new technologies and developments in fields including energy and engineering while creating and supporting hundreds of jobs.’

John McManus, project director at BDP’s Glasgow studio, said:  ‘This ground-breaking development will transform the way universities work with industry.

‘We are particularly excited to be working in the heart of the Merchant City on a site that is practically next door to our Glasgow Studio. We look forward to working with the University and Scottish Enterprise to create a Technology and Innovation Centre that establishes a world-class research and knowledge exchange environment for the city.’
