BACA reveals floating bus stop plans

BACA Architects has revealed these plans for two floating bus stops to serve a proposed river bus service in East Norwich

The scheme for the Serruys Property Company would create two stops for the bus along the River Wensum at Deal Ground and Carrow Road, next to a redevelopment site owned by Broadland Housing Association.

The architect’s view - Robert Barker

These floating bus stops will be constructed from prefabricated component parts, including plug-in components such as benches and bicycle stands so that the design can be replicated on other stops along the river. Integral lighting is designed into a canopy, which will provide shelter, signage and illumination to warn oncoming boats.

The river bus will be designed with a level access from the pontoon to the boat to allow inclusive access for pedestrians, cyclists, prams and wheelchair users. It would be free to pedestrians and cyclists and available between 6am and midnight from everyday until 2013.

In the longer term a new bascule bridge will provide a permanent crossing over the river. The new river bus service will improve access to and use of the river, about which the city of Norwich was founded. It may also help to take cars off the roads.

The new floating bus stops will form an attractive addition to the river, complementing the recent developments in East Norwich and will set a benchmark for future use of the river. It will help to form the catalyst for regeneration of East Norwich. It will also improve the connection between the City and the Broads, and make it easier for the residents of Trowse to walk or cycle into the city centre.’
