Atkins sees off Gehry to land Glasgow College jackpot

A team led by the UK’s largest practice Atkins has walked off with the bumper £300 million project to design a new college supercampus in Glasgow

Collaborating with Michael Laird Architects, the practice beat an impressive shortlist to land the New Campus Glasgow project which will see the city’s Central College, Glasgow Metropolitan and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies brought together.

The unlucky finalists were; starchitect Frank Gehry with RMJM; Archial; BDP; and a combined Hopkins and Bennetts Associates team.

Although Atkins has yet to draw up details proposals, a ‘preferred option masterplan’ is already in place for the supercampus featuring a collection of buildings over Cathedral Street in the city centre and on the Clyde at Nautical College.

Speaking about the selection process Vic Emery, chair of the New Campus Glasgow Board, said: ‘This was an extremely difficult decision. We considered long and carefully the proposals from the best names in the business, global companies with long track records of coming up with the goods on important projects such as this.

‘We were aware of the responsibility of getting it right on the design of such a landmark project and we believe the right choice has been made in Atkins.’

Emery added: ‘The standard of the companies on the shortlist, and of the 49 who responded to the pre-qualification questionnaire and who didn’t make that shortlist, shows the importance of this project.’

Construction work is expected to take four years, starting in 2011.
