AStudio and LCE complete £50m Wigan Life Centre

[First look] Work has completed on AStudio and LCE Architect’s £50 million Wigan Life Centre, which houses a library, swimming pool and council offices

The PFI project for Wigan Council involved the demolition of an existing swimming pool and the construction of two new city centre buildings close to the town hall.

The 5,358m² Information and Learning Zone building features a ‘one-stop shop’ for council services, a library and the council’s property shop and neighbourhood zoneoffices.

The 14,820m² Healthy Living Zone building features a 25 metre swimming pool, a gym and primary care trust facilities.

Wigan Council leader Peter Smith said: ‘The Wigan Life Centre is a fantastic iconic development that we believe will be the new standard-bearer for the delivery of public services.

‘Already the envy of our neighbours, in the relatively short time it has been open it has proved to be a tremendous success. This is thanks in no small part to the bright, welcoming modern design and the outstanding build quality. It is Wigan Council’s aim to provide the best quality services to the people of our borough.’

AStudio director Max Rengifo said: ‘When masterplanning the scheme, it was essential that we linked the retail, civic and cultural quarters, creating a long-term solution for the town and an inspiring flagship for the future of the borough.

‘The end result, the Wigan Life Centre, provides a vibrant hub for public life with a new town centre for information, arts, learning, council services and healthy living.’

LCE Architects director Mike Hymas added: ‘This is the second successful major urban regeneration project that we have delivered through the PFI process. They were both great collaborations with other Architects and both had a very effective and proactive Client Authority.

‘The Wigan Bidders Team showed great faith in the team and I believe that with Astudio we fulfilled the promises we made to provide a world class project which will make the Client’s vision a reality, changing people’s lives and really making a significant, sustainable contribution to the community and the regeneration of the town and Wigan’s civic life.’
