ASL opens doors to Widnes MyPlace centre

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Austin Smith:Lord has completed this £3.5 million MyPlace ‘youth mega club’ in Widnes, Merseyside

The lottery-funded C-RMZ scheme (Central RMZ) effectively overhauled and extended the listed 1930s former Kingsway Medical Centre. The new centre houses fitness and sports facilities, club and chill out rooms, art and IT rooms, media suites including recording studios and a broadcast room, performance hall, sensory and therapy rooms and a training kitchen.

A spokesperson for the practice said: ‘The new Youth Centre is conceived as the hub of a new Youth Village.

‘By clustering the library, leisure Centre and local college with C-RMZ, at the civic heart of Widnes, it is intended that the hub will become a magnet for young people in a neutral location, with a rich source of activities, facilities and support to teach life skills and engender good citizenship.’

A condition of support from the Big Lottery Fund includes an obligation to maintain the centre for 25 years.

The project features a pre-patinated copper-clad extension, wrapping around the rear of the existing building, with a ‘Nordic Blue Living surface’ supplied by manufacturer Luvata.

  • I actually helped to get the Health Centre listed so this is very heartening for me to not only see its reuse and restoration but also a really good bit of new architecture to complement it.
