Asif Khan wins Cannes Lion award for ‘Selfie’ pavilion

Asif Khan Studio has won the prestigious Cannes Lions Innovation award for its MegaFaces pavilion at the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Sochi

Built at the entrance to the Sochi Olympic Park, the 2,000m² pavilion for Russian telecom giant MegaFon featured 10,000 telescopic cylinders.

The ‘Mount Rushmore-like’ façade was able to display a trio of eight metre-high ‘sculptures’ scanned from the faces of games visitors.

The award marks the first time an architect has won a Cannes Lion prize and the first time the coveted gong has been given to a Russian scheme.

Khan worked with engineering and design company iart on the project. The pair collaborated on the Coca-Cola’s Beatbox Pavilion for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Architect’s view

Asif Khan, founder, Asif Khan

‘For thousands of years people have used portraiture to record their history on the landscape, buildings and through public art. I’m inspired by the way the world is changing around us and how architecture can respond to it.

“Selfies”,”emoticons”, “Facebook” and “FaceTime” have become universal shorthand for communicating in the digital age. My instinct was to try and harness that immediacy in the form of sculpture; to turn the everyday moment into something epic.

I’ve been thinking of this as a kind of digital platform to express emotion, at the scale of architecture.’
