Arup reveals plans for Austrian mega-hospital

Arup is to design one of Europe’s largest hospitals in Vienna

The global firm’s Ireland-based healthcare design team teamed up with a local firm in Austria to draw up plans for the Krankenhaus Nord Wein facility.

The 800-bed hospital on the east side of the River Danube will cost about €1bn (£834m) to build and fit out.

Due for completion in 2016, it will have the capacity to receive 40,000 hospital admissions, 250,000 outpatients and 16,000 surgical procedures per year.

Arup Ireland director Eoghan Lynch said: ‘We aim to keep growing our international business and it is important to recognise that there are regions around the world that represent a healthy marketplace for our services even if the domestic market in Ireland is facing difficulties
