Arup Associates unveils Qatar 2022 World Cup ‘model stadium’

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Arup Associates has revealed this 5-a-side pitch which was built as part of Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 World Cup

The 500-seater air conditioned structure was used to convince FIFA officials that the region’s hot summer weather could be made harmless to the beautiful game.

Designed to be zero carbon throughout, all the energy needed to power the arena’s ‘under-seat’ climate control system is collected by a ‘sun farm’ of solar concentrator panels.

With outdoor temperatures in Qatar reaching more 44 degrees Celsius the playing surface of the stadium can be kept at a comfortable 23 degrees.

The structure features a revolving roof canopy which can be adjusted to cast shade over the pitch or closed completely to maximise climate control.
