Allies and Morrison wins planning for Royal Mail depot overhaul in Reading

[First look] Allies and Morrison has landed planning permission to redevelop a 2.4 hectare Royal Mail site in Reading, Berkshire

The scheme features 370 flats and 28,000m² of office space on a former mail centre site on Cavendish Road close to Reading railway station.

Martin Gafsen, Royal Mail property director, said: ‘We are delighted that the go-ahead has been given for the development of this site, which we no longer need for our operations.  We look forward to working with interested parties, including the Council and Network Rail, to create a vibrant new urban area in the heart of Reading.

‘Royal Mail has a strong track record in using the proceeds from disposal of surplus property to invest in the mail operation  This includes selling the freehold or leases which we hold, and, where appropriate, working with planning authorities to ensure that properties we sell are attractive to new owners.’

The planning application was submitted to Reading Borough Council in spring 2011.
