Allies and Morrison and SAVE reveal Battersea vision
Allies and Morrison with SAVE Britain’s Heritage has floated a ‘step by step’ proposal to redevelop Battersea Power Station without any demolition
The concept – which follows hot on the heels of Terry Farrell’s vision to replace the building’s east and west walls with colonnades – retains the ‘whole’ building as part of a ‘gradual approach’ for its re-use.
The future of Giles Gilbert Scott’s Grade II*-listed brick masterpiece was thrown into doubt after developer Treasury Holdings went into administration late last year.
Proposals lined up for the 15.4 hectare riverside London site include partial demolition under plans by KPF and Rafael Vinoly for a 60,000 seat home for Chelsea Football club within the iconic structure.
A number of developers are rumoured to be interested in the building which is now on sale on the open market for the first time ever.
Earlier this year, Terry Farrell announced plans to submit a planning application for the partial demolition of the building as part of a bid to save the landmark from total destruction.
Allies and Morrison and SAVE’s latest bid comes more than 30 years after Graham Morrison with Martin Richardson drew up plans for SAVE to restore the building with recreational and leisure facilities, a museum, shops and offices.
The latest scheme keeps the main boiler house in a ‘raw state’ for temporary events leading to conversion into a new permanent 11,000-seat venue and focal point similar to the south bank.
Surrounding new buildings will be kept lower than in recent schemes and a Grade II-listed Water Pumping Station will also be retained.
The area between the power station and River Thames will become an open space for recreation and events.
SAVE president Marcus Binney said: ‘SAVE led the campaign to save Battersea Power Station and obtained the first planning permission for conversion to leisure use.

Its wonderful riverside position, and its capacity to hold large audiences, provide the potential for a very popular venue, providing both an indoor and outdoor alternative to concerts in places such as Hyde Park.
‘The Power Station has the added attraction of immensely grand entrance fronts on both the river and land sides. The column chimneys soaring to 103 metres (338 ft) making an unforgettable impression on every who arrives there.’

Step 1 is to use it in a raw state with the minimum necessary structural support and repair, as an open air venu for concerts. There will be a covered stage and temporary raked seating
Step 2 introduces a lightweight roof, a permanent raised floor with facilities below, permanent stage, side stages and raked seating
Step 3 introduces hospitality boxes for sponsors.
