AJ’s Rory Olcayto named IBP Features Writer of the Year
AJ deputy editor Rory Olcayto has bagged this year’s coveted IBP Features Writer of the Year prize
Recognised for ‘truly outstanding’ features writing, Olcayto triumphed in a highly competitive category against entries the judges described as ‘the best ever over the life of the IBP Awards.’
Awards host, Peter Murray said: ‘The judges thought his feature on the competition to design a new US Embassy was remarkable. His other two entries were of a very high standard “which when combined with thoughtful and considered design made him a worthy nominee” for Feature Writer one judge stated.’
He added: ‘They also praised his writing style and the way it draws the reader in and holds their attention to the end.’
Olcayto was given an award plaque and £500 cash prize in recognition of his win.
AJ’s sister publication Architectural Review(AR) also had cause to celebrate, winning the Non-weekly Magazine of the Year award.
Murray said: ‘AR has continued to develop whilst still maintaining a very high standard of both editorial content and design, all presented in an easy-to-read style.
‘The judges were particularly impressed with its highly opinionated editorial stance, its overall layout and the use of some outstanding photography. The latter being often the first thing to be cut during tough economic times.’
AJ reporter Merlin Fulcher was shortlisted in the Young Journalist of the Year award category.
The citation praised his in-depth reportage on the failure of green walls.
