AJ launches 2012 Retrofit Awards

The AJ has teamed up with Arup, ISG and ZBP to launched its annual Retrofit Awards, championing the best in the creative re-use of buildings and construction

Now into its third year, the prestigious awards scheme celebrates design, engineering and construction excellence that prolongs the active life of buildings and infrastructure.

Last year the most coveted prize - the Best Lower Carbon Building Project accolade - went to 5th Studio’s Wolfson Flats scheme in Cambridge (pictured). There were also victories for Bennetts Associates’ Stirling Prize-shortlisted Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres transformation, Stratford-Upon-Avon in the cultural building category and Shepheard Epstein Hunter‘s Percy Gee Building, Leicester in the higher education category.

This year’s award categories range from small houses to historic buildings and transport infrastructure, rewarding pioneering products as well as exemplary design. View a full list of categories here.

Paul Finch, editorial director of The Architects’ Journal said: ‘Retrofit continues to be critical in upgrading the built environment to meet the challenge of a low-carbon future. These awards are an excellent way of acknowledging success in this important market .’
