AFL wins Kuban contest with 'shock and awe' stadium

Manchester-based practice AFL Architects has pledged to create a ‘frightening’ 45,000-seat stadium in Russia

Working with Italian partners Tecnion, AFL will design Russian Premier League side FC Kuban’s new stadium in Krasnodar, near the Black Sea.

Designed as a club stadium, it will also be capable of hosting FIFA tournament games as well as other sports and events.

The practice said its design reflected the ecological importance of the Krasnodar region to Russia – and would strike fear into visiting teams.

AFL sports director John Roberts said: ‘We intend to create a stadium the opposition will be afraid of visiting.

It’s a cheetah ready to pounce on the opposition

‘In section, the building brings the supporters close to the pitch while the upper tier spectators tower over the pitch. All this is reinforced by the angular roof, cowering, as if it’s a cheetah ready to pounce on the opposition. ‘

The roof is designed to retain the noise inside the stadium, increasing the atmosphere and reducing the impact on the neighbourhood.

The stadium is set within a structured green parkland, and almost a third of the site will be retained for picnicking and other uses.

The stadium will be raised from its surroundings onto a podium, which will itself provide accommodation for a variety of commercial activities.

AFL said golden plates or shards on the elevations represented sunflower petals and wheat field patterns
