Abbey Green Shortlist: Lynch Architects

  • Comment

Abbey Green’s ancient traditions and its folk and mythic past inspire Lynch Architects’ proposals for its future

‘The green could house a new set of rituals alongside remnants of old ones,’ says director Patrick Lynch, citing his plan for a new museum in a tower design which echoes the 15th-century Curfew Tower at the park’s historic core.

Alongside the museum tower, Lynch proposes the raising of a belvedere created from the excavation of the amphitheatre opposite Broadway Theatre. There is also a new pond that, with the tower and belvedere, forms a new inhabited section on the green’s south-western edge.

Lynch also proposes a triumphal arch at the park’s north-eastern corner and a pavilion against St Margaret’s Church, which acts as a bandstand and hall for wedding parties and festivities. Other elements of the scheme include earthworks to better integrate the existing landscape and the surfacing of new and existing routes across the green in hoggin grit to create a garden atmosphere.
