AA symposium: Why architects are mapping the Arctic

[AA Lecture Hall 12pm, 2 February] Discover the science and motivation behind ScanLAB’s latest project to create 3D models of melting icebergs in the Arctic Circle

The pioneering outfit – founded by Bartlett graduates Matt Shaw and William Trossell – captured 26 ice floes in ‘forensic detail’ as part of series of expeditions to Norway’s Fram Strait with Greenpeace and Cambridge University.

Scale models of the icebergs have been recreated for an exhibition at the AA where they are displayed alongside images from the journeys.  The replica ice floes melt in the gallery as part of a bid to harvest scientific data concerning the shrinking ice cap.

The symposium Frozen Relic & Other Absent will feature two sessions, the first looking at observations on the ground and the latter examining how data can be analyzed remotely.

Panelists will include leading sea ice scientists, architectural thinkers, educators and campaigners.

The discussion will cover methods of ‘bearing witness’ and tactics of instigating long and short term political and spatial change.

The debate will also question how the existence of ‘perfect 3D scans’ of a landscape change our relationship with the original terrain. It will also look at how this perception changes as the models melt over time.

The free conference will happen in the AA Lecture Hall from 12pm to 4pm on Saturyda 2 February. The exhibition closes on Saturday 9 February.
