AA students unwrap ‘Big Shed’ in Dorset

[First look] Students from the Architectural Association (AA) have completed this workshop building at Hooke Park in Dorset

The project – clad in locally sourced larch – is part of a masterplan for the 140 hectare working forest owned by the London architecture school.

The 500m² ‘Assembly Workshop’ building was designed by students on the AA’s new Design & Make masters course which is led by Martin Self.

Design & Make students will use the building for prototyping, testing and research into architectural systems.

It is expected to be used for the construction of further student-designed-and-built campus buildings over the coming decade.

Existing buildings on the woodland site include structures designed by collaborations between ABK, Frei Otto, Buro Happold and Edward Cullinan.
