‘100 architects’ may work on Earls Court

A huge wave of architectural design work could be up for grabs if Terry Farrell & Partners’ 28-hectare masterplan for the redevelopment of the Earls Court in west London wins planning

Developer, Capital & Counties Properties, has mooted a range of future commissions on its £8 billion scheme to replace the two exhibition centres at Earls Court. Initial proposals were submitted last month, with a 2012 start hoped for.

‘If you look back at this in 2050, there could have been 100 architects or more working here,’ said Terry Farrell.

International competions to design landmark buildings, landscaping, and signage may follow planning permission, however the scheme’s three applications (two outlined and one detailed) have yet to be validated.

Terry Farrell & Partners’ managing partner, Mike Stowell said: ‘The more we can promote this as the work of many hands, the better it is for London.’

The 7,500-home scheme features 9.5 hectares of public space, over 185,000m2 of office and retail, and could include a hospital, and cultural facilities. Practices already working on the masterplan include Allies and Morrison, Chris Dyson Architects, Benoy, KPF, Make, John McAslan + Partners, Patel Taylor Architects, Paul Davis + Partners, and Studio Egret West.

The masterplan is the result of a ‘collaborative consensus’ between the 12-strong design panel, and has been designed to offer flexibility during the 20 years the redevelopment is expected to take.

Landscape masterplanner, Patel Taylor, designed a ‘lost river park’ over the railway lines crossing the site, and a series of residential squares that are part of a strategy to create an open and easily-accessed space.

The project’s first phase, designed by John McAslan and Paul Davis, provides housing for residents of the Gibbs Green and West Kensington housing estates, both of which are in line for demolition as part of the scheme.

As for the remaining architecture, Terry Farrell & Partners will work up briefs and assist the developer with appointments for individual plots once planning consent for the broader project is achieved.
