10 Design make first UK shortlist in Newcastle library contest

RMJM offshoot 10 Design is among the four teams shortlisted for Newcastle College’s new £10 million gateway building

The education project represents the first UK shortlisting for the company which was setup by former RMJM employees two years ago.

The other teams shortlisted for the coveted job are Atkins, Ryder and PHP Architects. Far East-based 10 Design is competing as part of a bid led by JM Architects.

Comprising a library, social spaces and IT facilities, the new building follows a string of RMJM-designed additions to the college’s growing Rye Hill campus.

A new 11,000m² sixth form centre designed by RMJM is planned to open next month however the troubled multinational has not shortlisted been for the gateway building job.

10 Design has offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Edinburgh, with a further studio planned to open in Istanbul.

In 2010, the company beat Kengo Kuma, Hopkins and Zaha Hadid to land a 55,400m² public library (pictured) in Dalian, China.

The Newcastle College bid has been led by the 10 Design’s 8-strong Edinburgh office which had previously focused on work in Europe.
